Understanding Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a technique used to bypass the part of the brain that prevents us from changing a form of behaviour that is either undesirable or no longer serves it's purpose.

Debunking some myths around Hypnotherapy.

You ARE in complete control. It is one thing to see stage hypnosis, it is quite the other to really understand what is going on. You are NOT out of your own control, your brain and body must be willing to be a participant of stage hypnosis and some very in-depth routines for screening are performed on individuals to assess their abilities.

Private sessions of hypnosis are performed to change behaviours that are causing reactive emotions, habits that no longer serve a purpose and recalling information that can help put the pieces back together.

Hypnotherapy is not a quick fix one session wham bam thankyou ma'am solution. You need to be really ready to change the habit/behaviour for the mind to really take hold of the new information you and I are giving it.

But how? Your brain is like a super computer. Like I have explained in the Kinesiology and Meditation blogs, your brain will absorb what you teach it. Some information it will keep, and some it won't. Following up a negative experience with an anchor and usually un-beknown to you will teach your brain that trigger to use in the future, should the need arise again.

Example - Emotional Eating: Negative event creates emotional response, triggers the brain to start pushing for the relief (in this case some comfort food), body craves the food because this is now the only way we know how to feel better, we eat the food, (sometimes overindulging dependant on how emotional the event was), and usually followed up with guilt, leading to negative self-talk...and the circle starts again.

This - is not your fault. This happened because the brain and your body found comfort just that one time or maybe 2 times and decided this is how we are going to deal with this emotion every-time we have it.

Your brain is designed to keep you safe. It will always assess if something is "risky" or unsafe and throw everything it has at you to stop you from doing it. This behaviour can come from things we were taught from society as children, from listening to others belief systems, listening to judgement therefore fear we ourselves be judged. So when you want to quit smoking, or lose weight, or shake off anxiety - the core reasons can be out of your control now, installed deep within your subconscious mind and generally un-accessible without some help and some guides to help you through.

That is why it is so important that you are ready to change before starting the Hypnotherapy journey, because if there is doubt, your brain is already stopping you because "change is scary".
